Busting the Age-old Myth: Eat more and Stay Slim

How often have you wondered in amazement at the ability of some people to consume sumptuous amounts of food and not gain weight? There is a common notion around where people think that the more a person eats, the more weight he gains. There is, however, more to this fact than what meets the eye. Many people can stay slim despite their eating habits and this is not because they have a rigorous workout regime. While working out helps in losing weight and staying in shape, the key according to new researches lies in the genetic coding of an individual.

Some basics of Human DNA

The DNA of human beings is made of sequences of molecules that are called base pairs. These base pairs constitute the genetic regions. The genes are determiners of several influences on our body such as the colour of the eye and hair. They also determine whether a person has a general tendency to be obese or to stay slim.

The findings of the research

A research was conducted by the team of the finest scientists from Cambridge University. It was led by Sadaf Farooqi and the research was backed up by the European Research Council.  Previously, we have had studies show the implications of genes on obesity. There have been numerous cases to suggest that often an individual cannot help but gain weight due to the presence of these obese genes. This study focused instead on the genetic coding by which one stays slim and lean even though they eat a lot. Here are some of the features of this study:

  • The research was conducted with a sample value of more than 14000 people and it was one of the largest studies ever conducted in this matter.
  • The DNA of these subjects was compared and then these were classified into various weight groups.
  • The focus of this study was to determine the genetic influence on the weight of an individual.
  • The studies showed that when the faulty obese genes were absent in an individual and instead they had thin genes, they could stay slim easier than the other subjects.

What does this mean?

Does this mean that a healthy diet and exercise have no outcome whatsoever? No is the simple answer to this. This is because one can easily fight their genetic irregularities through a healthy diet. Eating the right food in the right quantity can help in staying in shape. Burning calories and eating food to enhance metabolism are tried and tested methods of staying slim and they still hold.

It is only those individuals who have no proper diet and exercise and still manage to stay slim that the research has focused upon. As it turns out, they have their genes to thank and due to their DNA configurations, they stay in shape despite all odds.

Conclusion

Staying slim is not necessarily staying healthy. Neither is it true that all obese people have poor health. The health aspect is dependent on the things you eat. For instance, the absence of sufficient greens in your system can still keep you slim but you will suffer from health problems. So, the key to a healthy life is to eat healthily and indulge in a lot of activities and exercises. This is how you can enjoy both a perfect physique and good health.
